Restaurant Review – Rock Sushi Thai

I doubt there is anyone on this planet that loves Sushi more than I do… Well, Mikayla (my 4-year old) does and it works out great for me as I always use her as an excuse. She is also a great instigator and my husband can never say no to her! We have become regulars at Rock Sushi Thai in Meadowridge, Cape Town – it is convenient as it literally is just around the corner from our house and the food is so delicious! They also have decent sized portions at reasonable prices and the staff are always friendly and so patient with Mikayla (who insists on ordering her own ‘orange’ sushi and checking up on where it is every 5-minutes).

First of all, they do not have a kids menu. This will only work out well for you if your kids eat sushi or grown-up people Thai food. There is also a small little jungle gym outside the Meadowridge restaurant thanks to Col’ Cacchio for your kids to play on and the milkshakes are divine. Mikayla and I go on milkshake dates all the time after special events (ballet recitals, plays, school reports etc.) and these milkshakes are the real deal… Trust me. They are one of the few places that still use high quality full cream ice cream. There are only three falvours to choose from – chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. It is all you really need in life, to be honest. Okay, enough of the milkshakes (damn I want a milkshake now).

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true” – Lyman Frank Baum

What do you get when you combine a good dose of Caffeine, some Fairydust, a heavenly slice of rainbow cake and pots-of-gold jewelry? One ultra-special, yummy, sparkling giveaway!

To make this giveaway possible, I teamed up with Robyn & Janine – two fabulous sisters from Sea Point in Cape Town.Robyn embarked on her jewelry collection journey 13 years ago under the RUBY label and Janine is the inspired cake and cupcake supremo at Denise’s Delights – named after their mother. Family is best ♥

I have been coveting the Ruby collection for quite some time now and I love the high quality products. Ruby is an independent designer jewelry brand founded on the principles of ethical fashion. Ruby draws on the talents and skills of expert local silversmiths and gem artisans; as well as the traditional beading techniques of a township-based job creation initiative started by Ruby’s owner and designer, Robyn Lidsky. The Ruby collection has been carefully curated to reflect various colour palettes, rare metals, and semi-precious gems and crystals; and there are pieces suited to special occasions, a night out on the town, or all day every day wear. All items are hand-made in South Africa in limited quantities, and may vary slightly depending on available gems and unique beads and components – making each item that much more unique!

Look at her amazing Pot Of Gold Collection… which one is your favorite?

Denise’s Delights is a boutique cake, cupcake and catering outlet in Sea Point that is currently in its 26th year. Their house specialty is unique cupcakes with flavours such as red velvet (with cream cheese icing), BarOne, Lemon Meringue, Rocky road and gentle Vanilla. Their catering offering is equally tantalizing – they can handle any size function or you can make use of their incredible made-to-order specialties – must-tasters include their oriental fish, and scrumptious quiches. Their latest designer cake creation is a fabulous multi-layered Rainbow Cake (which you can stand a chance of winning).

Both Denise’s Delights and Ruby are based in festive, colourful Sea Point, one of Cape Town’s most loved commercial and high density residential neighborhoods – with it’s glorious Promenade, Atlantic Ocean views and diverse urban heritage. Its main road is a treasure trove of delights and reflects the diversity and cosmopolitan aspect of the area.

A Glimpse At What It Is Like Raising A Child With Cerebral Palsy, Severe Intractable Epilepsy And Cortical Visual Impairment

I recently reached out to Lisa, little Hunter’s mom, and asked her if I could please share their story. I have been following this brave little boy’s life on Facebook since the beginning of the year… I have cried for them with every setback and leaped with joy at every triumph. See, Hunter is a very special little boy – not only is he strikingly beautiful, but he also suffers from Cerebral Palsy, severe Intractable Epilepsy and Cortical Visual Impairment after damage to the brain was picked up In Utero… he is only 18 months old.

A Glimpse At What It Is Like Raising A Child With Cerebral Palsy, Severe Intractable Epilepsy And Cortical Visual Impairment

I admire his parents, they have remained positive throughout Hunters’ diagnosis and continue to do so every day – reading the updates on the Facebook page you can see for yourself, they are taking this head on! I have asked Lisa to tell us her story, to tell us what it is really like raising a child with Cerebral Palsy, Severe Intractable Epilepsy And Cortical Visual Impairment. This is their story as told by Lisa, his brave mom, a true inspiration…

pagebreak1

Our story begins when we first found out about Hunter’s bleed on the brain when I was still pregnant. At 32 weeks our gynae saw something on his brain in a routine ultrasound and we were immediately sent for a further 4D scan – we had been for an earlier 4D scan prior to this but everything was still perfect at that point… we were shattered by this news and did not know what to expect, we just kept praying for a false alarm but somehow the decrease in movement in the few weeks leading up to the scan made me incredibly anxious. The scan revealed enlarged ventricles and a bleed on the brain in a few areas. This could not be explained by any expert and the cause remains unknown, but we remained hopeful as other than the enlarged ventricles the rest of brain seemed to look fine. We were told that it is difficult to make any definite conclusions as ultrasound is not able do view areas deep in the brain.

We did the only thing we could do… Continue reading

I wish someone had warned me…

Such a beautiful, honest and raw article ♥

Treatmesweetlie

Heaven alone knows why, when I was pregnant, I only and constantly prayed for a successful natural birth. It would be a ritual in my daily prayers to ask the Almighty for a successful pregnancy and a successful natural birth. I was so naive and ignorant. I did not think about after birth. I did not think about nursing. I did not think about my emotions. Seeing all the pictures that mama’s put up of their peaceful sleeping babies made me believe that I was going to master motherhood and ace the transition from being me to being a mama. I was so wrong! There are so many things I did not know.

Before you read any further, I need to mention to you that this was my experience and that as everyone is unique, everyone’s experience is different.I pray that you do not go through what I went…

Today I Took My Daughter On A Cinderella Date… And We Learned Some Valuable Lessons!

Life is finally starting to get back to normal… I have started working again, got my confidence back and the kids are settling in nicely. Having a baby changes everything – wether it is your first or second… it does not matter – it…changes…everything (mostly for the good).

Before Knox was born, I used to take Mikayla on regular ‘dates’, this was our time – just us girls. During this time I would not pick up my phone unless it was to capture that perfect Instagram moment, because let’s face it – my child is freakin’ gorgeous. Anyway, even though I have made a point in including Mikayla when we do things with Knox and trying my best to give her equal amounts of attention we have not been able to go on one of our little dates since Knox’s birth almost 5 months ago – and that’s okay. There is so much adjusting, healing and changing happening and I knew it would be unfair to put too much pressure on myself to keep things the same.

We finally had a chance to start dating again today, we had such a blast! One day when Knox is old enough we will have our own dates too – I really think it is so important. We went to watch Cinderella at Ster Kinekor. I was worried at first as she is still very young and not a fan of ‘real-life’ movies, but it was what she chose to watch. It was a brilliant choice – we both really enjoyed it and it really exceeded my expectations. If you thought the 2015 reboot of Cinderella would be sassy and all-knowing you’d be wrong. And its very traditionalism is its greatest strength. Before you read any further, I will be referencing quotes from the movie – so if you consider that a spoiler – spoiler alert!
